I have a client's laptop that I'm working on that needs a hard drive upgrade-problem is that it's a dell and I'm worried that dell have some kind of propriety pin assortment for their laptops or there'll be some other complication. I've read through review for the seagate momentus 5400.3 ST980815A (http://tinyurl.com/226vhq) and saw that inspiron 1100's (client's lappy is a inspiron 1000) need some kind of pin adapter. In addition to that i tried to fit another 2.5' hard drive in there from another dell laptop (same ata/ide interface) but it was a little too tall to fit in the slot. And finally nothing really mounts to the drive to pull it out-there's a big piece of plastic stuck to the bottom with a tab to pull it out and I'm worried that when i get it in there is there forever. Thank you for any pointers or personal experiences that will help me out here!

As long as it was made within the past 4 years there should be no problem.

Around the turn of the century Dell was releasing laptops equipped with 2.5" 12mm HDDs that I think were made by IBM or Fujitsu. Most laptops are designed to accept 2.5" 9.5mm drives.

I have one of those larger drives floating around here somewhere.
