I remember when PCIe was first being talked about. The big hyp was that it was running x16 but that it was suppose to close the gap between moblie and desktop gamers.....but I havent read anything lately about PCIe for laptops......where is it and when is it expected?

If you're talking about notebook PCIe graphic adapters, they've been out for about a month now.

If you're talking about notebook PCIe expansion slots, they're still ironing out the ExpressCard Specification

have any benchmarks been done to see how close it is to closing the gap between desktops and laptops? Also are they swapable?

It all depends on the graphics chip they're using and the naming conventions.

For example, when the 9700 Mobility came out, it wasn't actually a 9700 that was designed for low power use, it was built from the RV350/RV360 core not the R300 core.

So when you compare a benchmark between say a 6800 Go and a 6800 GT, be sure that you know whether or not they're using similar cores.

As for being swapable, it's usually an expensive and proprietary option for the higher end models (if it's even offered at all).
