Hey all,

I need a recommendation for a reliable laptop for around $800 or so. I have been looking around (mostly finding some at Dell) but it is always nice to get suggestions from others.

I am on the brink of getting hired either at a computer repair shop or a web design and development firm. I need a laptop that I can code, Photoshop, stream video (hulu.com for example) without a problem, and play DVDs at decent quality.

Oh... It needs to be XP. I don't do Vista. :P This will be for work and school (papers and research) mostly, therefore I do not need to game, and there probably wont be any need to edit video on the laptop.

Some other specs... at least 2GB of RAM, DVD RW drive, ethernet port, wireless internet, 80GB HDD minimum.

Thanks for your suggestions!
- pcrobot :)

Does a low native resolution bother you?

Most (if not all) laptops in that price range have WXGA LCDs, and trying to navigate around Photoshop in a 1280x800 window is annoying, especially if you're working on something bigger then 4 megapixels.

If I have to do that detailed of work, I can bring it home--screen resolution isn't an issue for me.

Me? Rookie?

I'm not the one who forgot to include a copy of Windows XP on the laptop, something pcrobot specifically asked for.

Try again, junior :D
