This is sort of a crazy question, but anyone have any thoughts about which makes more sense? The 1730 the way I have it configured is $4350ish for a Penryn Core 2 @ 2.8GHz/800Mhz, and dual 8800GTXs with a 4 year complete care warranty.

But...I hate spending that kind of money.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a cheap, but still gaming capable laptop, and just today found a sale on Asus' m5S1n where it's $900...I could buy almost FIVE of these things for the price of that 1730, and if it died in a year or something I wouldn't feel TOO stupid.

It has a Core 2 @ 1.66GHz/667MHz/2MB L2 cache, and a Geforce 9500GS (basically an 8600GT). I *think* that'll run today's games okay, and I can always get a new one in a year or two if it's not cutting it.

I run games of course, and I want something that will stand up to running Folding @ Home on both CPUs for 15+ hours a day. I *think* the 1730 will actually handle that (apparently the cooling system handles 100% CPU utilization at stock clock speeds without breaking much of a sweat), but I'm not sure about a smaller 15" notebook that may be built cheap.

Anyway just wondered if anyone had a thought on this. I can't be the only one who sees a $4000+ price tag and wonders "what the hell am I doing"?

Why would you wait for the m17x? Wouldn't it be basically the same hardware for a similar price? Plus personally I've never heard good things about Alienware (although I know they're owned by Dell now.)

I actually ended up ordering the XPS 1730 late last week, but I'm having second thoughts about it. Not sure if I should cancel. It's SOOOOO much money, although it apparently can stand up to Folding, and it seems to be pretty much my dream laptop right now (aside from I'd love an LED backlight).

Dell XPS is way to much, cancel it and get an ASUS. A kick ass system can be had between 1500-2000

*edit* even this one for 1200 would be adequate imo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220308
