Hey,

It's been some time since I've been looking aalll over the net for the perfect notebook. I was looking for a 2.0 GHz P4m with the 9800 MR 256 MB card, but I can't find one... I don't want to go with with the Dell XPS with a P4 with no battery life. So... I was wondering if the 9700 can play today's games and future games, like HL2 and DOOM3 well at resolutions like 1024x768. But to get better frame rates, I dont mind lowering the resolution to 800x600. Question is, if i go with a 17 inch screen XGA+(http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/ ... 00S1&s=dhs), will i suffer from interpolation? Because it ain't the native resolution? :?: :?:

Help,

Thanks.

Good question. Here are a few options I can think of.

1. The game might have a setting for widescreen in the display options.

2. Many games test your display hardware to configure your game for the best resolution. I know that some games can be played in 1600x1200 but my maximum resolution is 1024x768. The game automatically recognizes that and does not allow me to select the resolution of 1600x1200; only 640x480, 800x600, or 1024x768.

3. The drivers may handle those sorts of issues. My sister's older laptop had an option in the Display Properties, tab Settings that showed an option of 1600x1200 and her hardware was not capable of that resolution. We updated her display drivers and that problem was corrected.

I think it would automatically be detected that you are operating a widescreen but I have not experienced this first hand, so that is somewhat an educated guess.

you will be able to play them, but on medium settings. And don't expect more than a couple hours battery life out of your notebook with a 9800 in there

My bad, I misunderstood his question. When he said " Question is, if i go with a 17 inch screen XGA+) Thought he was asking about playing games with a widescreen.

I will stop talking now..... :?

Hey stick, yup you're right, I just checked the customization page for the dell inspiron 9200, and its a 17 inch WideScreen +XGA screen (resolution?!?!?) Does that cause me another problem, like you said? Will I have black bars at the top and the bottom when playing games? Do all games support wide screen? Oh and I still need to know if it will make the screen look crappy if I lower the native resolution of +XGA down to 800x600, or if I can do it at all?

As for reply #2, well if I ever find a notebook with a 9800 and 2GHZ P4-M, well I will probably plug the notebook in the wall when playing games.

Thank you all in advance =D

I've got a friend with a 1.3Ghz and a Radeon 9700 Mobility and UT2K4 runs like ass on his machine. He had to lower the settings to 640x480 or 800x600 and turn almost everything off to get it to look good, and even then the interpolation makes it look worse. He comes over once in a while and we blow the shit out of people on Cain's Lair when he's done

Anyway, I would highly recommend either a 9800 Mobility or a 6800 Go over the 9700 Mobility if you intend to play any games.

Heh, thanks for the feed back flytrap. I had pretty much settled my mind on the Dell Inspiron 9200, which has the following components:
2.0 Ghz Dothan Core P4M
1 GB ram DDR333
Radeon 9700 128 Mb
17 inch Screen XGA+
Wireless.. b/g
DVD-RW+/- and CD-RW combo

Maybe your friend's cpu brought the fps down? Anyhow, I would take a 9800, but its not an option in the 9200. Plus, I don't want to have the Dell XPS, because it's too heavy and has no battery life (build for gaming). And the only laptops that have the new 6800 are ones in the US, and I need to get it from a Canadian reseller, or seller :p. But if you ever find a nice notebook similar to this one, with a 9800 or a 6800 that sells in Canada, please tell me fast, cuz I may be buying the inspiron 9200 tonight :D

Yea, I definitely (note that it is spelled correctly) think that it is the CPU that brought it down. I can plau UT2K4 at 1024x768 on low settings and smooth frame rates and I have a P4 2.4Ghz with a 32MB Mobility ATI 7500. The CPU is a big factor when it comes to games these days.

That is a good desktop replacement you are getting. With that hardware look for overheating. That is just a little advice from me because mine is also a Dell. Model 5100.

A friend of mine just bought the 9200, he loves it.

Not as good a battery life as I would like though, and it runs hotter than my laptop(mostly because he has a mobility 9700 and i have a 9200)

We can both play Doom 3 on our laptops. he can play it at 1024x768 on medium quality and I play it at 800x600 at meduim quality.

I can play it at 1024x768, but the framerate drops if there are more than 2 people on screen. His framerate also, drops, but not as much as mine does.

That 9200 will play those games just fine. My I8600 has a Radeon 9600 which is similar to the 9700 and it handles everything I throw at it at mostly mid settings. Plus, the 9200 can get almost 5 hours of battery life. Pretty cool for a 17 inch notebook.
