I would second the Sager suggestion. I was going to get one myself, but then ended up talking myself down to a lower end notebook from HP. Sager has a great rep, from what I've heard, and tend to stay on the cutting edge of technology.

Thanks Deathlokke for the reassurance. Its always good to get a second or third opinion especially when investing in a system that "hopefully" wont be obsolete in 2-4years.

I'd hold off at the moment though unless you need the laptop immediately.

Sager is now using a new board revision from Clevo for that series that allows for quad core chips, however, there's going to be a new batch of quad cores being released in November that can acheive higher speeds while consuming less power. Might be beneficial to hold off a little while and perhaps use the extra time to throw a few extra bucks into your budget as well.

Compared to the Sager? Let's look:

Pros:
Optional Blu-Ray
Built-in PhysX

Cons:
Slower DDR Memory (667Mhz vs. 800Mhz)
Dual Core (vs. Quad Core)
Intel T series Core 2 processor (vs. E and Q series)
Older Intel 3xxx series Pro Wireless (vs. Intel 4xxx series Pro Wireless)
Only two HDDs (vs three HDDs)

call me crazy.. macbook pro. thats if you want a LAPTOP. all the 'laptops' with sli and whatnot are more of desktop replacements then anything... not very portable and get terrible battery life.

And it would be a good recommendation, until he said the laptop would be used purely for gaming, which rules out all Macs.

Don't get me wrong I love my PowerMac, but not even Parallels Desktop has gotten their 3D drivers working correctly in terms of running a game within WinXP on a Mac.

uhhh... dual boot windows xp on the macbook pro... remember when mac switched to core2duos and you can install winxp on them...

costs more money then most laptops, but in all honesty, mac builds better quality machines then most other companies.

I am speaking from experience. my mbp is the best gaming laptop I have ever owned. better then the pos alienware I used to have. better then the even bigger pos dell I owned before that... you get the picture.

so... i'm going to go back to playing my source engine games on my winxpmac now : )

I've got a Dell 1730 and its a decent little gaming box I'd say. Not as good as some of the above mentioned but solid, reliable and totally doable. Its got an extreme penryn, sli graphics and raid hard drives. The full keyboard and numeric keypad is great and the screen kicks ass. For the money if you are after kicking some lan party ass and not looking for "look at me my pc is so" awesomeness then it is a nice portable way to game and make noobs cry. IMHO
