I've been using a PDA for some time now (Sony Clie PegSJ-33) and I'm really happy with it. But lately you just don't see nearly as many companies putting PDA's out there, especially those that support the PalmOS (I'm not partial to either pocket PC or Palm, my sony just happens to use Palm). So what does everyone think? Are PDA's as we know them an endangered species about to go extinct?

You're right - there are less PDAs out there nowadays. Sony is no longer in the market, Palm is more prevalent than iPaq...

Alex hit the nail on the head.
Cellphones have been the killer app for portables for some time - frankly, email on a PDA or cell phone much less browsing the internet is painful and amounts to gadget notoriety IMO. But it depends on the market - it's not flying in North America, but Japan loves the stuff.

i think we'll see more things like the treo 600 with a pda/phone/kitchen sink. eventually i think all mobile devices will be in one small case. mp3/video player, pda, phone, camera all in one package.

I plan to get a PDA in the future. I dont need a phone/PDA/e-mail/kitchen sink type of thing. I'd rather have one thing dedicated to each.

If Palm got their heads out of their asses and produced a Tungsten T3 with WiFi instead of that Bluetooth bullshit, they'd sell more PDAs.

The T5 has bombed, Palm hasn't quite learned yet.

I love my Palm, but if they keep being retarded with their products, I may switch over to PocketPC

The palm market is maturing.

If you look at it from the perspective of Clayton Christensen (Harvard Buiness School prefessor) who coined the term 'disruptive technologies'...Clay states that newer technologies capture market share by innovating new technologies that are simple, inferior and inexpensive... as companies grow and the product matures and evolves into a 'sustaining' phase where the product improves on features and becomes more complex and caters to the higher-end market.

The manufacturers that were edged out by these 'disruptive' companies are gone..the ones that survived have slowly and steadily improved on the design and complexity of the platform.

I think you will see this continue until another product comes out and displaces the palm, just like the palm did years ago....

..just my .02
