Ok so back in August the right hinge on my four and a half year old Clevo (yes that was a plug) laptop broke after many years of faithful service. I didn't want to buy another one yet because it would have been mad expensive and I'm sorta emotionally attached to this one.

So here's what happened, I found a Sager laptop that I knew was the exact same base model as my Pro-Star. So I bought it off some guy on eBay and it showed up in the mail today so I decided it was time for some major surgery.

The plan was to disassemble both laptops and create one badass laptop from the best parts. Here's what followed:

Here's a shot of my ProStar on the left and the Sager half disassembled on the right:

Both laptops completely apart, and the ProStar LCD panel with I deemed the better of the two.

The final product; a fusion of both Sager and ProStar parts in one laptop:

And yes, the surgery was successful as I'm posting this message on the new frankenlaptop.

I love this laptop.
I wrote my 100+ page research thesis paper for my bachelor's degree on it three years ago. It was there running Powerpoint for me when I was being grilled in front of the degree board about my research. It was with me when two guys jumped out of a car and tried to mug me but I managed to fight them off only losing my backpack but keeping my laptop. It's been know to fly out of overhead compartments on planes and attack people. I've edited countless videos on it, and when my girlfriend and I ever get around to making a porno it'll be there to edit that too. It has encoded countless DivX movies and my entire CD collection. It's solved more problems at work then the interns could create. I've got enough parts to keep this thing alive till 2011.

Seriously, it was May 2001 and it was literally between Dell and ProStar. Two systems with roughly the same specs. I wanted 512MB of RAM (64MB/128MB was the standard at the time). Dell wanted $800 for it, ProStar wanted $235 for it.

I forsee my ASUS hanging with me throughout my 4-10 years of college. Lets say college is challenging for a laptop, particularly as a computer science major. Two days a week this thing is toted around to my computer programming class then back to my desk, which is a rough enough environment already.

What I usually do is keep one eye on eBay for parts. You can get things there a lot cheaper then buying them from a retailer/reseller.

I'm hoping my two Thinkpads hang around as long. I've got a T20 (PIII 733) and an R40 (P-M 2ghz) that are both pre-Lenovo so I hope IBMs goodness stays with them long into the future.
