CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The $100 laptop computers that Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers want to get into the hands of the world's children would be durable, flexible and self-reliant.

The machines' AC adapter would double as a carrying strap, and a hand crank would power them when there's no electricity. They'd be foldable into more positions than traditional notebook PCs, and carried like slim lunchboxes.

Not great for most of us, but what do you guys think about this for kids?

This is sorta old.

Negroponte has been working on this for years, he's still unhappy that the laptop costs $100, because he wants to send it off to third world nations.

If anyone hasn't read his book Being Digital, you're really missing out.

Hell, I would pay $100 for that thing. 500mhz, Linux, "indestructable", and powered by a hand crank? Thats frickin awesome.

I'd pay $100 for one of those too. However it says on their webpage that it won't be sold to individuals, but they are in talks with manufacturers to build and sell them for a markup.

Even at $200 US, I'd buy one.
