Hey guys! Just got a 1TB external Western Digital HD & I'd like to encrypt the volume on it. But here's the deal I really dont want to use any software that requires you to install it to a host PC or for that matter requires any software install at all. I'd like to plug in the drive type my password & move on with life. Seems like everything out there requires you to either A> install the software to the host PC (True Crypt, WD Safe Lock, etc.) or B> Use some small EXE to launch & then mount the drive, etc. etc. (True Crypt Travel). Any thoughts?

Since you didn't buy a drive that already has encryption capabilities built in (like Hitachi's self encrypting drives, your only option is what the OS provides. For Windows, you need Windows 7 Enterprise/Ultimate, Windows 8 Pro/Enterprise, or Windows Server 2008 and use BitLocker. Mac OS X has FileVault. I'm sure Linux has some feature, but you'd have to install it.
