I'm looking at 2 general configs for a notebook for my girlfriend to use for college. Her budget is 1500$ and she wouldn't game on it or anything but I do want it to last for her 4 years. So Ive basically come to 2 configs:

Either an AMD proc with a Mobile ATI Radeon 9700 128MB or an Intel Pentium M proc with an Upgradable MXM 16X PCI-Express NVIDIA Geforce Go 6600 256MB.

Now with the AMD she'll get future 64-bit support, should she ever need it. But with the MXM I should be able to upgrade the video card for her should she ever need to. Also, Intel MIGHT release 64-bit Pentium M on the same chipset, maybe :/

But anyways, where should I go?

Hmm ... difficult one. I am a gamer myself. I would go for the AMD version ... I am an AMD fan  . The video card if not required 4 gaming is more than enough for anything that should come out. You should consider RAM first of all (min 512) and HDD speed secondly( min 5400 ... I would go for 7200 though is battery leech), video card thirdly (X700 or 6600), and last the proccessor if you want it to be "Office" worthy (Atholn 64 Mobile or Pentium 4 Mobile).

Intel isn't adding 64-bit extensions to the Pentium M until well into 2006, possibly 2007.

The next Pentium M core, Yonah, is going to bump it up to Dual Core, add Intel's Virtualization technology, a 666Mhz bus, SSE3, and a few new power management options.

So, if she's not going to play games, go with the 64-Bit AMD.
