I guess there isn't one single standard for notebook opticals. I recently bought a "slim" drive and tried to pop it into my nice new asus notebook only to find that it is too small. Can someone help me out in finding the correct form of optical drive for my asus Z71A notebook.

Search pricewatch.com. They have tons of stuff. If you can't find what you're looking for under the different catagories, search for "asus z71a optical" comes up with a bunch of stuff.

Then check reputable online vendors like new egg and zipzoomfly for the part you found. Or check on resellerratings for the vendor's site where you found the drive.

I don't know about Asus, but I know that Clevo uses caddies for most of their drives so you can buy a drive, screw it into the caddy then slide the caddy into the laptop. Of course, if it's a different color it might look a bit funny.

i always thought that the bare optical drives had the same formfactor. the only difference is the front bezel to match the bodylines of the laptop. they are all wrapped in proprietary caddies and connectors, but those can be disassembled.

Yeah, I've got a bunch of different opticals for my laptop:

Toshiba DVD-ROM Region Free
Torison DVD-ROM Region-1
Panasonic CD/RW Drive
