I was thinking it would be cool to have a complete windows XP installation on an external HD (usb 2.0) and then have the ability to boot from it. Is that possible?

it should be possible, but to move it from pc to pc would be impossible.

What if I used a different type of connection? Like firewire. It seems like there should be a way to make the bios think its a floppy or CDROM, then tell it to boot from there.

nah, a lot of newer computers can support booting from USB, my laptop does support it, although it's only USB 1.1, so booting from a USB drive would be very painful. I have in the past, installed windows onto my iPod, and booted off of there on my desktop in the past. I just wanted to see if it could be done, turns out, it can.

If your BIOS supports booting from USB then yes.

Simple, connect your USB drive, set your BIOS to boot from CDROM, put the XP CD in the tray and CTRL ALT DEL. Your external drive will appear while you go through the install process. It's not advisable to do it this way, but it can be done.
