Maximum PC

Sitting here in hotel with friend. They have a new HP, to end notebook. I was on my Dell 5160. Both have internal wireless. She asked why her internet was running so slow when mine was humming along quite nicely. She said if she plugs in power, then everything runs fine. I had her plug in the power and sure enough the internet ran smooth.

I do not have this problem with my Dell. She said her and her 2 sisters have the same problem at home on there wireless network. The brother at home as external wireless on his laptop and does not have these problems.

Anyone have an idea what might be causing there internet to slow when on battery?

See if there's an option in her laptop where the transmitter power drops to 25% when running off battery power.

WiFi transmitters are known wattage hogs ranging anywhere from 35mW (Orinoco Classic Gold) to 200mW (SMC High Power Eliteconnect)

Thats what I thought. I told her that on a laptop there are usually options that can be set to cut back on power use when on the battery. So my thoughts were that the notebook wasnt transmitting as much power due to some power saving feature somewhere. That was my stab in the dark, looks like i was on the right track. Next time i see her I will check it out.
