I travel once or twice a year--and I'm headed to Vegas in a few months. I'm never familiar with the cities I go to, and I often want to find specific destinations (such as grocery stores or electronics outlets) that are available on foot or through public transportation. Sometimes I'll just want to go someplace and may decide on a whim to, for example, visit a pawn shop. The problem is that I'd like to use electronic means, like a laptop or web-enabled smart phone, to find what I want.

Ideally, I'd like to visit a search site, type in my current location (or have coordinates from my GPS logged) and ask for directions to a grocery store or a pizza place. I've tried through Google to enter a custom location (my hotel's address) and find local restaurants but that hasn't worked well. I'm probably not harnessing Google's power very well...

Can anyone give an occasional traveler some tips to be directionally self-sufficient in a strange location? I'm hoping to get an Android phone before my trip, but I'm waiting for AT&T to get itself on the ball before committing to one.
