I know some of you out there have these certs and could offer me some advice. I'm getting laid off from my job soon, and I figure It's the perfect time to go back to school. I want to delve Into networking and am trying to decide If Microsoft certs or Comptia certs are more preferred. There's a local school that offers Network + classes, or I drive an hour to get to the school that offers microsoft certs. Which would you do?

Thanks for any advice.

Not perfect, but scan through the jobs in your area and see what people are looking for. If they're all comptia, then get comptia, if they are all Microsoft, then get Microsoft.

definitely (note that it is spelled correctly) want a MCSE or better. MS certs will take you further, if your serious about your career and expect to move in the future to where opportunity you'll want the base knowledge of MCSE.

in reality its best you know how to do anything and everything. research a big corporate computer infrastructure, and learn everything as well as practice implementing all of it.

It really depends on what you want to do. Hardware, software, support, etc..

MS certs are great for basic support level jobs, but you'll always be a help desk monkey or someone who manages them (sorry, monkeys).

If you want big $, look into vendor specific certs .. Cisco, for example. Hardware based networking support is very lucrative if you can find a position.

What are your current qualifications / experience?
