What are the general advantages for being A+ certified?
What/where/when would it come in handy?

I didn't respond sooner but I was on vacation :D

I am going for a 4 year degree but in the meantime I wanted to have some kind of credentials behind my name.

Thanks for the responses.

Well, if you have no degree, and you have the time to study up for it without affecting your current grades, then go ahead and get it. It probably will just be resume filler once you get your degree though.

Its just to show you know what your doing while poking around PC's. Alone its not likely to land you a job that pays more than $10/hour. However, it doesnt look bad in any resume.

Its worth it as it never expires.

Our company employs 25-30 tech at various points in the year - 4 year degree or no every single one of our employees is A+ certified, you simply cant get in our door without it.

A+ certification is the MINIMUM standard for PC repair. - meaning most vendor courses for certification (Lexmark, HP etc) require A+ as a min - meaning you couldnt even take the course or touch the equipment without it.

Even applicants with degrees need to keep that in mind. If you are going to work with hardware in any support / implementation capacity its a good idea to scoop up the credential - it isnt that hard to get which is why not having it usually has you not being considered for employment. A+ isnt the end all be all, and wont land a big paying job, but without it some of your other more sought after credentials are irrelevant.

Good to know.

While I am going to school I have nothing to back my name up. A+ cert. will not only make me feel better, but will give me school motivation as I am on my way.

So I guess it is settled, I am going to knock the A+ out as I go through school.

A+ isn't worth as much as it used to be. A lot of people read the cram books passed the test and don't know the troubleshooting material. Where I work and every where I've ever worked they rather you have the experience then the paper saying you do.. Currently I'm studing for my MCSE in Server 03. So i can get promoted and move to the server side. That means a lot more then A+. It will also take you longer to get. Not as many people have MCSE as people with A+, especially in Sever 03. The problem with A+ and PC repair is that it doesn't pay what it used to. Everything is modular and its cheaper and easier to throw something away or replace the defective part rather than fixing it. A+ is a start but don't rely on just that
