It depends what you want to do? Do you want to work with UNIX/Lunix or go the Microsoft path with servers. Networks are the way to go. Cisco Certs are great but, you have to want to work with routers and switches. You have do desktop certs so if you are planning on being a desktop tech then Microsoft's MCDST (desktop cert) wouild help you with all the indepth knowledge of windows OS.
I like MCSE and CCNA+ certs. If you just want good money, go for the CCIE.

That’s like saying if you want to be famous cure cancer. Very Very VERY few people pass the CCIE written, and of those who do even fewer pass the LAB! Not trying to be an arse, but I see this way too often. The reason the CCIE pays so well is because it is almost impossible to obtain.

Heh, I was going to be snide and say the same thing. :)

However, I assume he has a job and is just looking for the next step.

Unfortunately, he really needs to think his goals over first. Sounds like he wants to be a tech support type person with those certs, but is that really where he wants to go? What is he doing now, and what does he want to do in the future. He needs to answer that before we can chime in with useable suggestions.

FWIW, certs are nice, but not much beats experience.

Personally, I'd suggest specializing in something, be it security, networking, servers, what have you. Then go get a cert if you think it will advance your career.

Make sure you you enjoy what you do. If not you are wasting your time.
