Wrong forum but-

BIOS = Basic Input/Output System.
This is the low level set of code that allows your operating system to 'talk' to the computer and its devices. In the old days, the BIOS was stored on a ROM (Read Only Memory) chip on the system board. In modern boards, the BIOS is generally stored on a flash programmable chip so it can be updated as the need arises.

Without the BIOS, your system wouldn't know what to do after you press the power button.
