Maximum PC

I work as a tech in the electrical maintenance field. I'm 45 and in a couple of years can retire from my job. I'd like to start a 2nd career in the computer field. I have about 70 units from a community college, mostly math, physics, and CS. If I take another semester, full time, I can get my AS degree (2 yr degree) in CS (programming).

At this point in life, getting a BS degree is unlikely. Could an old fart like me get a computer related job with only 2 yrs of college? Would anyone hire me at my age? I'm not looking to make big bucks, just an interesting job to make a little extra money, either full or part time.

A few things I would suggest:
1) Definitely complete your AS, especially since you are so close to finishing.
2) Check with the CC's career department. Alot of CC's are tightly integrated with local businesses that are looking to hire recent grads. They can sometimes point you to local companies that are hiring and give you a heads up on what theyare looking for.

Some questions:
When you say computer related, specifically what you mean?
Is there something particular that you enjoy?


Also your age has nothing to do with you being hired or not-hired. It's illegal to base a decision on age. If you ever supect that is the case, I would promptly file a complaint with the EOC.

I'm thinking of programming, perhaps Windows applications, or industrial applications, such as building automation, etc. I enjoy troubleshooting and problem solving, and did very well in my college programming classes.

You know something, with your background building automation might not be a bad idea. Alot of those positions require a 4yr degree, but with your background it may not be necessary.
If you could take some classes on PLC programming and also ANSI C, I think that would help alot.
I work for a research lab and the university we are affiliated has advertised for jobs like that; IE: the card swipes for the entire building are malfunction and they require someone with basic PLC skills and electrical skills.

I'll look around and see if I cant find some job postings describing that.
