Does anyone have any suggestions for learning good solid basics in computer hardware? I'm looking for something free by the way.

Public Library. Pick up an A+ book. I think some of the Head First books are pretty good as well.

+1 on A+ certification books. The books written by Mike Meyers (not the actor :mrgreen:) are held in high regard. I've also heard a lot of good things about "Upgrading and Repairing PC's" by Scott Mueller. I've never read that book, but I've read others he's written in the series and they're great.

If you want free, spend some time looking around Google Books. They have a lot of full books, and what they call "limited previews" which actually means its missing a chapter or two in most cases.

Have you tried google? There's literally hundreds of decent tutorials for learning about computers and PC hardware.
