I am a self taught computer nerd. I have been messing with website programming lately. I am able to use php, html, JavaScript, sql. I found that using XAMP or WAMP very useful for web development.

What I would like to know is, how do I go about hosting my website? I know that I have to register a domain name, but is there a way to do it for free? And is there anything else I need?

And what is the best text editor for making a website with PHP, CSS, java, sql?

You can register a sub-domain for free through dyndns or another similar service. Other than that, you're going to have to pay for the domain name. You can host the website yourself for free, you'll just have to point your domain name to the computer you're using as a server.

As far as the text editor goes, I'd suggest notepad++; however, if you want a full IDE, I'd suggest trying out several and pick the one you like.

+1 for notepad++ if you're on Windows. TextWrangler is a similar option for the Mac.

You might also want to take a look at Eclipse. It's a full IDE that was written for java, but it has plugins for many other languages.

Yeah, you'll have to pay to register a domain name, but you shouldn't have to spend more than about $9.99. Network Solutions (www.networksolutions.com) is running a $6.99 special right now, and they were running a $2.99 special the other day, might want to keep an eye on their pricing.

And I echo TextWrangler on the mac, best one I've found.
