Maximum PC

I want to buy a sound card (yes, I know most people think they're unnecessary), and I'd like some advice from others who have bought sound cards. I use my pc mostly for gaming, but it is also my primary movie and music platform, so I want a sound card that is excellent in all capacities. I am currently using 5.1 speakers with 1/8th" jacks, but I'm looking to upgrade to an optical system in the future, and I would like my soundcard to outlast that change. So, out of those sound cards which support both types of outputs, what would you audiophiles out there recommend?
