I just bought an HP desktop (first desktop purchase EVER), and I would like to play Skyrim on it. I have adequate specs for the game, with the exception of the video card. Game runs, but it doesn't look all that great, and the frame rate is extremely poor. Plus, the compy blue screened twice when I ramped-up the graphics quality. Bethesda recommends a 1GB card, which is what I'd like to get.

Bottom line, I know that I will need to purchase a better power supply to support the video card, but what (budget) card should I get for it? Thanks for all the wisdom and know-how!

Hi. Ok you already know about the Power supply, If you are asking if a PCIe 2.0 card will work in a PCIe 1.0, yes it is backwards compatible. You may lose about 3% of the performance, but that is really nothing to worry about. I had a 2.0 Card 9800GT in a 1.0 slot in the desktop I just gave my sister and it did fine.

Thanks coastie! I've read that in other places, but I figured I'd double and triple check, ya know?

I find it odd that a recent HP computer w/PCIe would only be 1.0. PCIe 2.0 is from 2007. I highly doubt it is not a 2.0.

How much are you looking to spend?

Not much, airhead.

I'm selling my Xbox 360 because it turned into a Roku box (I hardly play games on Xbox Live anymore, just Netflix), and after spending a portion of that, I should have around $100-150. That would have to cover the power supply AND the upgraded video card. Amazon has these two that I'm considering:

ZOTAC GeForce 9500GT 1GB PCI Express DDR2 $54

Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus Series 500W ATX12V V2.3 Active PFC Power Supply - (RS500-PCARD3-US) $40

To put things into perspective, I spend less than 10 hours a week gaming. I spend less than $150 a year on games. However, I would love to have a video card that lasted for at least 2 years, playing games on medium to high settings (not ultra). I'm not into minor improvements in performance between graphics cards, or debating about specs. If a recommended requirement for a game is met by a cheaper card, then that is what I would prefer. Unless one could reasonably argue for a more expensive card (i.e. around $50-60 more), I'd be happy with a cheapie.

I forgot to ask something else, what is the current power supply?

Single-slot cards usually don't need any extra power. All power is drawn from the slot so I would grab the GPU first before a PSU upgrade. I would recommend something like a GT 430, you do not want the 9500, old and very weak for skyrim.

Airhead, the PSU is 250 watts. I dunno how this thing runs, honestly!

That MSI might not fit...I only have one PCIe slot on the motherboard, and I honestly haven't cracked the case open to see the space available for GPU's.

Seriously? I've seen HPs over the years usually will have a 350 watt at least.

Unless you need a low-profile card you can try this ASUS or for a true single-slot this eVGA. The minimum power spec for a 430 is 300w. Just to be sure, what is the exact model of your HP?

HP Pavilion p6710f

It was a great deal at $450 where I work (Radioshack)!

Nvidia is the only stuff I've actually used personally so I tend to know a bit more about their stuff. AMD does have some nice products, but seeing as I fold as well there isn't any reason for me to switch.

Back to you, I haven't seen anything that can compete with the 430 at that price point.

Thanks airhead! I appreciate your knowledge! I'll see about cracking the case open tonight and taking some measurements, and then I'll make a decision as to which GPU to get.
