My video card started to over heat more then usual so I decide to take it apart and dust it out. I put everything back together and it still ran hot. So im thinking new thermal paste ? does it matter what kind you use ? and do you put the thermal on the GPU and the ram or just GPU ?

Specs:
q6600 stock clock (for now)
H70 cooler 4GB ram
ocz vertex 2 100GB ssd
1TB spinpoint 3
ATI 4870

Now I know what you thinking 4870's are known to run hot yes I agree but I enabled manual fan control and is set at 60%. sitting at 49 50 c idle and goes to 60 71 when gaming is there a way to flash the card lol so it always runs at 60% idle at all times ?

Also what would be a good card to buy with the build I have ? I mostly play WoW cata and I run it at 1680 x 1050 res

Put paste on everything that touches the heatsinks (except for the screws. If I state the obvious, I can't be blamed if someone misses it.)

Thanks but you answered my least important question I asked . Dont worry someone else will pick up the rest.

Ooh, now I see. You can use most kinds of CPU paste. When you replace the cooler, ALWAYS use new paste. Don't forget to clean off the old stuff. Rubbing alcohol works well.

I used a brand called xigmatekhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233069&Tpk=xigmatek%20pti-g4512 PTI-g4512 its what I had around. I cleaned it off well and I would have put some on the memory but there was this white block thing on the memory so I left it there

I cannot exactly help you because I am sold on Nvidia. I did, however re-paste my graphics card heatsink/fan. Damn, that was a beautiful looking chip!

Lowered my temps by about 3-5°C.

on my 4850 (not 70, but should be similar layout) I used artic cooling mx2 the last time I redid it. very easy to use, made a thin "x" on the GPU. works well, but they have mx4 paste now which is better.

the RAM and VRMs have thermal pads or tape (as opposed to paste) that youll need to reuse. just take it easy peeling that stuff off as its easy to wreck, although you can tease it back into shape if youre patient.

I use 91% isopropyl alcohol (get it at the drug store for a couple bucks) and coffee filters to clean the gpu and heatsink.

My info is for Nvidia too, but there is not much you can do to a heatsink and a fan. The EVGA ones are almost the same as a couple of the AMD coolers.

I bet the heat fried it. Put an ice pack on there and wait until the weather cools.
