I am new here but hope to get some help. I recently built my first PC and it has been awesome. The only things that I am worried about is that occasionally the CPU temps will spike. This happened once right after the build when I was trying to rip a DVD, and recently while importing a ton of music from old machine to iTunes. Both times the problem went away once I stopped what I was doing and I haven't had much time to look into it. Tonight I am sitting here doing nothing more than web browsing and I get another alarm saying CPU temp is at 80c......and it wont go down.

After the iTunes incident, a week and a half ago, I pulled stock cooler and reapplied thermal paste as per Arctic Silver 5's website. Nothing changed and I was still sitting about 45-50c at all times. I don't know what to do from here, like I said this is my first build. I thought I took my time and did my homework but I must have missed something along the way.....here is a screen shot of the incident with HWMonitor and the built in ASUS sensors.

Yes its a 2600K and not overclocked.....I paid the extra money up front so that once I get time to do the research I can begin to play with it. I didn't want to have to buy a whole new CPU when I could spend $30 up front.

It has
16gb Corsair Vengence ram
Antec's TruePower Quattro 850w power supply
Cooler MAster 932 HAF Case
Stock cooler that came with Sandy Bridge Processor, I read that would be fine for stock settings.....

Everything else should be shown on screen shot, if not let me know and I will add to the list.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Edited original post to include link.

The heat sink was fairly easy to install and didn't move or rock at all when I was done....I didn't like the plastic locking devices it uses and was extra careful to make sure it was all the way seated.

Whats your idle clock speed? On stock should down clock to 1.6ghz. Disabling it's power saving abilities could have it running at 3.4/3.8ghz constantly. Idle, you should be 30-50c depending on conditions.

first i would definitly take Airheadq's advice and enable the power saving ability if it isn't already.

i never did like Intel/amd stock heatsinks..if you have some spare coin..i would get a Hyper 212 or any of the Corsair H series all in one water cooling units..i have the H70 and my i7 930 @4.2 MHz stays right around 30C give or take a few degrees depending on the weather

Airheadq,
I have never touched any of the settings in the new GUI BIOS or with the ASUS AI SuiteII program, have to do more research for that.

I am not sure how to check my idle clock speed, and the temp you mentioned are what I had expected.

Dtischerd,

I can make the money available for a good cooler, I don't want to mess up what I have invested already. I assumed the stock cooler would be good for stock operations, but you know where assuming gets you! The H70 looks to be $100 which isn't too bad. I take it that is a cooler that can be used in the future to do some minor overclocking?

with the 2600k and the H70/Hyper 212 you can do some substantial overclocking :D

probably in the 4.5 to 4.9MHz range.

here's a thread with a lil insight.

if you go with the H70..you will need to remove the MOBO to install the backplate..as i did with mine..i have the HAF 932 case aswell(love it!) and the mobo tray cutout isn't quite big enough.

not sure about the Hyper 212 as i don't own that cooler.

Ok thanks for the heads up! The case is awesome, its makes it real easy to work inside so installing the cooler shouldn't be a problem. Is the tray cutout an issue? Or just something I need to be aware of?

nahh..just the bottom portion of the backplate is blocked so swapping out coolers isn't as quick as it should be.
if you have a Dremel..you can cut a lil bit away to make access easier..that's what i'm gonna do when i paint the inside of my case.
