I just bought a new BFG 260 GTX which requires two 6 pin power connections. My 500w PSU only has one 6 pin connector.

The good news is that I have an adapter that takes two 4 pin molex jacks and turns them into a 6 pin jack. The bad news is the only free 4 pin jacks I have comes from the floppy drive which is the wrong size jack (but the same voltage) and a SATA drive jack (again same voltage).

So for a temporary measure I took two 4 pin molex jacks from a dead PSU and replaced the above two jacks so that I could use the adapter.

So far I've been using this setup for about a week and have had no problems. I even played Crysis on Very High settings without a hickup.

Do you think I will run into any problems if I continue to use this setup or should I get a PSU that has the proper connections?

I've replaced connectors on the PSU with other ones twice, as well as adding new connectors to a PSU once. One ran just fine for five years until I retired it, one was killed by a lightning strike, and one is running just fine now. So long as you get the wire placement correct, you should be just fine.

If it works fine now i see no reason why it would conk out later on.

there should be no problem.

did you solder the new connectors in? provides a better connection than just twist on wire nuts or "twist and tape."

Right now the wires are just twisted together and taped.

I was planning on soldering them once the initial testing phase is over.

My main concern is whether having two drives and a video card on one set of leads would be too much drain.

drives don't pull very much power. I think you'll be just fine, just sauter them.

You are probably fine. I have done this several times. If you were close to maxing your PSU... then it would be an issue.

DO make sure you solder and heat shrink though. Shorting your PSU would be all kinds of bad.
