I have been wanting to jump on the modding bandwagon for quite some time. And I am wondering how exactly does one install the motherboard tray and i/o panel, and pci card spots? Like do you just take apart another simple old computer and do it that way or what?

You need to provide a little more information on what you're specifically looking to get an answer for.

Lets say you build a custom computer case, do you just cut out the mobo tray from an older case then mount it in your own custom case?

or make your own tray.

Most things I have seen start with a pre-existing case and mod from there. Scratch building a case isn't something I'd recommend to somebody just getting into modding.
