Hi guys
Hope this is the right section
I'm building a new rig thanks to the help from Maximum PC's forums. I'm going to selling my old rig so I'd like to wipe the hard drives (120GB & 300GB)clean. Any advice?
Thanks guys

Format the drive in on a live disk of Ubuntu. Don't select the quick format, because that just deletes the MFT, you want to erase the entire drive.

Formatting is not the same as wiping a drive. We are talking about writing zeros or random characters to every sector of the drive making any private data virtually unrecoverable.

No. A strong magnet will not do.

A good overwriting program used correctly will make the data unrecoverable without special equipment. If you want to use a magnet, you'll have to find a bulk eraser that is designed for hard drives. If you don't have space aliens or the Illuminati's tech department looking for your pr0n collection, DBAN or another good eraser will do what is needed.

DBAN is the only fail safe solution. Do it once, do it right!

Take a drill and drill holes through it! That aught to stop data thieves! :D

Format your hard drive (quick). Write a batch file that copies random files to your hard drive until it fills up, then format it again.

I've seen some hard drives fail from complicated destruction programs (disk wipers) . They are so cheap now I quit crying about it.

My first Raptor -- ouch.

Many apps will write a drive to MilSpec values, but so will writting zeros really. You can full format the drive, write zeros, and end up with a drive I'd be comfortable selling.

Can you get the data? Ya, but you gotta work your ass off with a hex editor. I rate the odds that some eBay buyer is out there buying drives just to get random info off the drive as very, very, very slim. If I was buying a drive, I want to use it right away. I format it, use it, don't care what was on it.

So I just think all this extra work to get some magical (sarcastic...un-important info) off the drive as a moot point. Even encrypting the entire drive would keep n00bs from seeing what was on it without formatting.

Just being overly cautious, which is a good idea, but redundant to the purpose of the sale. Even DOD type encryption can be cracked if they care, so do they? 99.8% they don't.

I burned it onto a CD and it totally wiped these two hard drives I have in an older system. It's a legitimate program.

Only in movies dude. It would take a supercomputer running 24/7 more time to try every possibility in 256-bit AES encryption than the Universe has existed. 256 to the 256th power.
