No, but since the idea of the Ark being a computer is fantasy anyway, I just thought it would look good.

So more work to show.

This is what I'm shooting for.

Image

Image

Here's how I'll do it. I used good ol' expanding foam to fill in the pillar

Image

I have this thin rod

Image

I had to cut it to size

Image

Then I dropped in the rod

Image

And drilled a hole in the plywood base

Image

I checked to make sure that the rod will fit.

Image

And shaved off the excess foam

Image

Then all I had to do was set the pillar on top and push the rod through the top and bottom.

Image

Image

Three to go. :)

So it's been months now and I'm finally ready to finish this mod. There will be some changes made to the base and topper because wood looks like crap when painted gold so I'll do something different there.

My Angels arrived and I've painted them!

Image

Image

The pillars were done with tow different kinds of gold paint, but now that I bought more I can match them all.

First, this looks way awesome. Sweet idea!

Second, what've you tried to make the gold paint on the hardwood look okay? Sanding, priming, filler, etc?

I just follow my own painting guide:

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/id64.html

So I finished the 1st part of the top, there's more coming.

Image

Image

Image

I have some old trim lying around that I'll be adding under the topper to transition the 90 degree angle.

Image

Image

I'll also be adding more to the top along the edges making it look far more elegant.

The trim has been painted.

Image

Here's where it'll go

Image

I bought more trim too

Image

And these cool knobs

Image

This is how I do my wood cuts. Plain old Miter setup

Image

The two pieces go under the case like this:

Image

And here's what to expect when I add the columns

Alright, more work on top. I cut and added a sweeeeet chair rail.

Image

So you know where I'm going with this.

Image

Image

Now I'm working on the bars that the people who carry the Ark hold on to. Like here:

Image

I added those cool handles I painted earlier to the posts I cut with the miter saw.

Image

Image

The bars will be bolted to the bottom of the case

More coming.

I did a little more work tonight. I cut the rope looking pieces for the topper trim

Image

Image

I used plain old Elmers glue to bond it.

Image

I added the carrying poles to the bottom sides. I still have to physically attach them.

Image

Image

There's more coming to the bottom, including feet.

I decided to add a different gold to the mix. A shiny gold to the trim and angels.

Image
Image

I found a cool looking top piece too.

I've got some more done today. I painted the handles for the carry bars

Image

Image

I have more of the trim still drying, but you get the idea.

Image

Image

You think there are any other places that would benefit from the shiny gold?

I bought these cool thread spools from the local Hobby Lobby that I will be using for the Feet.

Image

Image

The top is done. It all has to dry though

Image

Image

Image

Now I'm working on attaching the transition trim near the top and the handles. The handles are going to be bolted on and they will be able to support the weight of the case when it's all done.

Today when I got home from work I mounted the feet. Here's what I need for each

Image

I drilled out one of the spool holes to make it bigger. The screws will go in through the bottom and in to the case

Image

Now the top of the screw will sit flush with the ground

Image

Image

Image

It took a whole 5 minutes total

So I attached the other carry bar and one of the front columns and I must say, IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP. I need to find something besides my current column choice to make the front look better.

Tomorrow I'm going shopping to fix this. Here's the Ark model I'm using:

And here's the direction I'm heading

So I had to rethink this. I bought 4 of these table legs

Image

I then pulled out the screw in one for each side

Image

Then added glue and screwed them together

Image

Then comes the paint.

Image

Image

And here's kind of what it'll look like later

I'm not sure about the front. Does anyone have any ideas about what I should do, if anything?
