I have an older Gateway M-6309. I've been wanting to make the keyboard backlit for a while now, but haven't really found much in the way of helpful sites for this laptop. The way I hear it, it would be much easier to find a compatible pre-built lit keyboard and simply replace mine with it - you skip all that soddering and wiring that way - but the question is trying to find something compatible and making it work.

Anyone else have experience with trying to do this who can give me some advice?

From other people experiences, older laptops don't have the required connectors for a pre-lit keyboard. You would have to hotwire a pre-built one a usb port or something. It's possible so hopefully your pretty handy. Here's and example of a mod.

Ask in that forum were Soulsaber found his keybord you might be able to get one that way.
Although I'm sure you could mod your keyboard, it will be time consuming and tricky to say the least. you would probably need to find some SMT LEDs and either some thin wire like 22 gauge wire and/or some type of homemade circuit board with some SMT resisters on it,etc. it could get complicated to say the least.
