hi, many people will tell you a fresh install is the "best" solution when going nvidia to ATI. I have do this without much difficulty however without reformat.

what I would do (did)
unistall nvidia drivers (run regcleaner...or driver Cleaner)
http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/

then remove the nvidia card, put in the ati card and then install the cat drivers (download most recent from ATI).

also you might want to check over at rage3d for any ATI related questions they have an extensive forum pretty much dedicated to ati.

peace.

To install an ATI card, first go here and download "Detonator Destroyer". Then use the uninstall option in control panel to remove the Nvidia drivers, say no to the reboot, then run Detonator Destroyer and say yes to reboot.....when windows comes back up load the ATI drivers and reboot. Violla!!! Your new card works purrrrfectly.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2753 (Use this only if you used 30.XXXX drivers)
Tool for removing the elements of the Detonator 30.xx drivers that conflict with the 40.xx drivers.

1) Uninstall the current Detonator Drivers first
2) Reboot
3) Install the new Detonator Drivers
4) Run this program.
