Error: could not locate INF file 'E:\content\win9x\win98se\wsefinish.inf

I googled this and got one resulting page which wasn't much help.

I get this error on startup.

This looks like ATI or Direct x, not sure what I have to reinstall to fix this...help anyone?

My System:

Win98SE
Asus P4T Mobo
P4 1.6
768MB Rambus
Audigy 1 Sound Card
ATI 9200se 128MB card
80 Gig WD hard drive partitioned into a C and D drive (40 gigs each)
DVD-rom (E drive)
Yamaha 16x CD-RW (F drive)

Hmmm... This looks like it might be a windows INF for setup. Most of my searches came up with nothing...

Can you search your hardrive to see if you have that file? If you do, can you copy it to the location that the system is looking for it? That might help to alleviate the problem. The only other thing I can recommend is the removal from the registry like the one on google did. However, I'm not certain as to what will happen if you do.

were you doing some kind of windows setup?

stick your win98 disc in your CD-ROM and see what happens...

While in windows go to the Run box and type SFC then hit OK or enter. Run the program and if you need to replace a system file, put your win cd in the machine. Every time SFC finds an error, corrupt, or missing file you must use the browse button next to the upper window and point to the win98 "folder" on the cd. If in fact you are missing any system files this program will find and replace them with your input.

This is an exact copy of what I left in the Comport Forum. Sort of runs with what I see here:

The registry is looking for the file wsefinish.inf and not finding it. Thus an error is generated. What is strange is that the registry is looking for the file in your E:\ drive. Looking at your specs your E:\ drive is your DVD ROM Drive.

I don't know exactly what the file wsefinish.inf is, however, definitely (note that it is spelled correctly) a .inf file. This error seems to pop up following updates to Windows 98 that are done with a CD from MS. This link mentions the problem:

Apparently the registry can't find the file because it is directed to look for the file on the E:\ drive. You could do as the second link mentions and delete reference to the file from the registry using regedit and searching the registry for reference to the file. Be damn careful and I would suggest backing up the registry prior to changing anything.

Okay, I think it has something to do with the windows updates disk i got in the mail a few days ago.
