I have a customer with a compaq deskpro EN 600mhz.. Everything runs fine except windows update won't run, says something about needing admin rights (which win 98se doesn't have)..also, nowhere can I download anything, not thru the lan adapter or thru a usb lan adapter. Files simply won't download.
Anyone have any ideas?

64mb ram
6 gb hard drive
cd rom
onboard sound/video/lan

Based on that, I'm stumped.

I'll admit, I suspect the error they're getting is reflecting something to contact the system administrator or something along those lines, so an exact error would be nice here.

From the symptoms it would seem that the user has Active X disabled. Windows updates needs Active X enabled to work. Tools > Internet Options > Security > Custom Level > check Active X settings.

The other possibilty is that you did that "Uninstall Internet Explorer" trick for win 98. If you did that, then Windows Update won't work and say that your system administrator wants all updates to go through him.

Download and run this little program:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=458

Everytime I have trouble running anything in win98se I run this program and the problem I was having goes away. It is written by Microsoft, it works and is safe because they backup everything they do and provide an undo file to run in case something goes hay-wire.

Nasty
