Hi,
I am running an ATI 9800XT video card and suddenly in Far Cry, Hitman Contracts, and True Crime, the card is locking up and giving me an error message saying that the GPU is refusing commands and that it had to be reset.
I am running an Intel 3Ghz P4
ATI 9800XT
2 WD 8MB cache HD
1024 MB DDR 333 in dual channel

Any ideas on what the problem is?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I already updated the drivers on ATI's Web Page.

When this happens it prompts me to send ATI an email describing the problem but of course I'll never hear from them on the issue.

Thanks though.

Hello John,

How did you uninstalll/install the new drivers. It sounds like a bad install to me.

are you overclocking anything on your system? if yes, try running your system at stock speed and see if the error goes away. try updating the drivers if you havent already. if your videocard new at all?

No I am not overclocking anything. I installed the drivers off of ATI's website after uninstalling the previous catalyst drivers for the ATI 9700Pro AIW that I just replaced. The 9700 was doing the same thing only in certian games. UT 2k4 runs fine as does Rise of Nations.

I have a 550 watt Antec True Power Power supply so that can't be the problem.

Thanks for the suggestions, anyone else?

try uninstalling the video drivers then reinstall Direct X THEN install the video drivers
ATI cards are sometime picky with when directx is installed

You might also want to make sure that your case temps are reasonable. Your card might be overheating, which can cause a lot of problems. So make sure your card's fan is still spinning.

Well the people at ATI couldn't help with the problem. He told me that there was something causing a conflict but it was impossible to tell what it was wihout uninstalling applications until the problem went away. So I reinstalled the OS and everything is working fine now.

Thanks for the help
John
