24x Creative CD-ROM
250MB (?) HDD thats on its way out
Win98 (non-SE I think)
It's my half-sister's. It stopped loading windows, without a floppy in it, it says:
Drive Not Ready
Insert BOOT diskette in A:
Press any key when ready_
So I got a Win98 bootdisk off bootdisk.com, and I cant get the CD-ROM drivers to load.
I check the C:\ directory and no system files appear to be installed.
I figure some sort of virus wiped it out.
But in any case, she needs the computer to find a job and cant afford a new one right now.
So my question is, since its been so long since I worked with Win98, what available(read: free) options are there for getting either Win98 installed by floppy, or getting this CD-ROM drive to work?
Do you know what kind of CD rom it is?
You could put the driver on floppy and install it on floppy boot up. I remember do this. it was a pain, but it worked. I had to write an autoexec.bat file
There was also a way to put the win 98 cd on floppy at one point - google for a utility. I think the cab files are just slightly to big without the utility.
I just thru-out all my 98 CD - but I did just find a 95 - do you have a 95 CD - it might be easier to move that to floppy un then get it going and upgrade to 98 - not sure. Look for the driver. If its an OEM recovery disk, it might even be on the disk (though often the name is changed).
