I run a Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 v4.1 mobo with Win 7 Pro 32-bit OS.
In Device Manager, there's a Standard Floppy Drive Controller entry. The location is listed as "on Pci Bus", and the driver is from M$ from 2006.
There's no header or port on the motherboard.
There's no mention of any floppy controller to switch off in the BIOS.
The only mention of "floppy" in the manual is in the instructions for using a USB floppy drive in case a user needs to install RAID drivers under XP.

I guess my question is "why do I have a floppy drive showing when my mobo has no provision for one?"

UPDATE: updated PCI bus driver from 3GIO to Pci Bus

Does the IDE port show up in device manager? What happens when you run the Hardware ID in google of the offending hardware? Do you happen to have a USB floppy drive attached?

1. Does the IDE port show up in Device Manager?
Yes. It's shown as ATA Channel 0, and ATA Channel 1. On Channel 0 is a WD ATA 160GB hard drive. On Channel 1 are my two Samsung DVD burners, identified as ATAPI Cdrom.

2. What happens when you run the Hardware ID in google of the offending hardware?
The Hardware ID is shown only as
"ACPI\PNP0700
*PNP0700"
There's no string showing "VEN" anything.
Googling this shows that it seems to be a generic standard drive without a driver date. Some sites offer a driver.

3. Do you happen to have a USB floppy drive attached?
No. The only USB devices I have attached 24/7 are my mouse and my Epson printer. I occasionally connect a Philips GoGear ViBE mp3 player to charge it and/or add/delete music files.

I would guess the 760G/SB710 chipset sports a unused FD controller and that is what your system is seeing. The Hardware ID on the driver should ID the source. If it is AMD then I am likely correct.

Actually, the ID of the driver isn't AMD but Microsoft, but your explanation makes enough sense to me. It's not like I'm having any problems, so I'll just leave it alone. Many thanks.

Did you shut off floppy drives in the bios?

Well if it's not hindering your computer, you could just go to Device Manager and either disable it or uninstall it.

My guess is something is with the hardware that's somehow enumerating a floppy drive because that motherboard does have an LPC chip which offers floppy controller interfacing. You could try looking at the properties for the vendor ID or device ID it's supposedly reporting and looking that up for fun.

I think I'll uninstall it via Device Manager, reboot, see what happens and report back.

It did reappear as reinstalled on reboot, automatically.

Nasty, I can't shut it off in the BIOS because it's not shown anywhere.

I'd disable it and consider it harmless (assuming disabling it sticks). A five minute Google search shows this seems to be a problem across a lot of other platforms and even reinstalling Windows didn't help. Like I said, for fun, you could try looking at its properties and checking out what device/vendor ID it's giving and look up that (not that I think it'll help).

Dude, including this time, he's mentioned in three times. Or are you insistent and have this motherboard that there is an option for a floppy drive to appear or not in BIOS? If so, please, divulge us on how to disable it.

The device ID is shown in Post #3 above. It turns out to be a generic floppy drive with no other info available.
Naturally, I did Google this and most posts regarding this were fairly ancient. I thought it had either died out or was solved, but I have it.
I did disable it in Device Manager, and then uninstalled it. Upon reboot, it's installed and enabled. My guess - for what that's worth - is that since it has a Microsoft driver, it's a software emulation that may come into play if I were to ever use a USB floppy under Windows.
