Recently had the dreaded "The User Profile Service failed the logon” and “The user profile cannot be loaded” failures when trying to log onto the only Admin account on my Win 7 laptop, despite using the appropriate password.

Research indicated that my Admin profile was likely corrupt, and the only other account on the machine was a standard user account.

So I employed the super secret "net user administrator /active:yes" from a command line to create a new admin account on the machine. Used that account to create new user admin account for me and then transfer the working files from my old account to the new one. Everything seems about right. I likely never will be able to log on using the old admin account, and the one thing I have not been able to do is get my old bookmarks from the Chrome and Firefox browsers that I was using.

Any tips how I might be able to copy the old bookmarks from the unuseable admin account to my new admin account ?

Thanks in advance.

As long as the contents of the account's user folder is fine, then you should be able to pull out all the data. Specifically the %APPDATA% folder.

for chrome, go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\bookmarks.bak
copy that to the same location in the new user account (backing up any current bookmarks file that may have been created) and delete the .bak from the file name. your bookmarks will show back up.

for firefox, I believe its C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\someprofilename.default\bookmarkbackups
I never use firefox so im not entirely sure if copying those will do the trick. I did however copy the entire Profiles folder for a buddy and copied it into the corresponding folder on the new account and everything came back just fine. settings, bookmarks, etc.

again, backup the files/folders before you do this in the off chance that something goes wrong.
