I installed a Samsung SSD on a new build then Windows 8.1. Some problems showed up but all but 1 were fixed.
After loading Windows I installed a 1 TB samsung SSD. The bios, Device Manager and Samsung installed software sees both SSD's but the This PC ( similar to Computer on Windows 7) does not see the 1 TB drive. I can't move files over till it is corrected. What did I do wrong?

You have to format it first. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management

OP didn't check back in for five days.

You know, these things should come with a card that says "You need to format this disk first before it'll show up in Explorer." I think this is the fourth person in a full year that had this question.

Sorry Dedgar. I was only asking what I did wrong so when I got the new SSD back I would not make the same mistake again and no I did not realize that I must format it. I finally got the new SSD formatted in the new computer. I thought I could format it in the old computer and copy everything but the OS from the C drive but under Disk Management right click it did not allow me to format. I have a RAID system in the old computer and maybe that stopped me.
Now the fun begins as I transfer data.
Thanks again

OK I am seeing this blog for the first time. Boy talk about making it hard to comment. I had to find this question no less than 5 times to get my comment in the right place.

So from what I am seeing, if I install a SSD on my old HP desktop running Windows XP; I must go to Disk Management and format the drive first? Then my system will see the SSD? Is this true with other hard drives? Say a WD Blue 1 TB unit? My system has SATA interface but the drives came without connector cables. Question. Is there someplace where I can find power supply cables to convert from the old IDE plugs to the SATA power plugs on the drives?

I want to clone my old WD hard drive on the system to the new SSD. If I am going to Clone the old to the new with one of the free cloning software packages; do I still have to format the SSD first? My WD HD is about 260MB and the SSD is 500MB. Also; Can I use a 1TB HD in my XP system without making partitions? I don't want to upgrade from XP because I have about $10,000 worth of software on it that will not run on Win 7, 8 or 8.1.

Thanks for your input.
