My daughter's out-of-warranty Dell XPS 15 laptop has a non-functioning DVD drive. Here are the symptoms:
1. Pressing button on drive doesn't open it. (You can still use the paper clip method.)
2. Closing the drive door with a CD in it raises the window that says Insert a Disk. The CD doesn't play.
3. On the left, Windows Explorer (it's Win 7) shows the computer with a C: drive and nothing else. But when you click on "Computer" on the left side, it shows a DVD drive as well as a C: drive. Trouble is, double clicking the D: drive there just opens the "Insert a Disk" window.
However, Device Manager says the DVD drive is working.
Am I right to assume it's a bum drive? Could a cable be loose? Would it be hard to do a home repair? (I've repaired desktops but not laptops.)
Thanks for any advice.
