I'm trying to fix a Gateway laptop that's suddenly slowed to uselessness. 1ghz processor with 1gb RAM. It had Vista. It would take 30 minutes or more to load, if it ever loaded. I tried installing Windows7 (slow to install, several hours) but still the same. It won't boot in safe mode either, gets 1/2 way and stops. When it did totally boot in 7, right clicks would take maybe 5 minutes to come up. I couldn't load Task Manager at all. I didn't have recovery disks, or access to the recovery partition. It has 2 sticks of RAM, 512 each, so I tried each separately with no change. I'm assuming it's a hardware problem as the new install was the same as the original, but not sure. Any suggestions or ideas?

Jim

So my guess it's either crappy RAM or the hard drive is starting to poop out.

If you have an XP disc available, you may try installing that and see how it feels. OR...you could try Linux.

I think there are several issues at play:

1. You probably have experience on a newer, faster computer. That will taint your perception and exacerbate how slow this laptop performs.

2. Let's face it: you have a slow processor, running on a motherboard with slow bus speeds, with just enough slow RAM, while probably running from a 5400 rpm HDD. In fact, the CPU and RAM are the bare minimum required to run Win7 - and Vista will react even worse. You've got a perfect storm for poor performance.

3. My above analysis assumes everything is running a peak performance. If anything is barely functioning, the situation goes from bad to dire.

Hope this helps.

Hey Jim,

1. Model of laptop?

2. How much money do you want to put into this?

3. Go to the maker of the HDD and download and run their free diag test app from their support download page.

4. If it passes, I'd consider maxing the RAM and backing up, then clean installing the OS using a slipstreamed disk.
