I am having the same problems on 2 re-installations of Windows XP service pack 2. No connection to Windows update was possible. I got Error Message 0x80244019,0x8024D001, or 0x80190154 as it suited Windows Update. I went through Mozilla Firefox and downloaded Service Pack 3 and sort of installed that. Windows Update doesn't find anything to download no matter how long I wait. I am currently trying to put in Internet Explorer 8 Its been on Installing Updated for about a half an hour now. Other attempts tell me of preconditional downloads that just don't install because I need something else first. I ran a wipe program before the re-instal of XP. Anti-virus is active.

You might want to temporarily disable the security. What have you tried? If you search out those error codes there are a few different Microsoft Fix-Its you could try (hell, one of them might even work).

I just went through the same thing, SP3 broke windows update, there is a FixIt for the problem. What I found to work was I installed Windows XP with SP3 slipstreamed (it will work with SP1 or SP2 as well I tried it all 3 ways), dont go to Windows Update, let Windows alert you there there are update, and click install from the shield in the "Notifications Area" do this until you 2 or 3 times, then after that you can go and get online and download Microsoft Update and all will work.

Also since you are runnig SP2 you might want to give this a try!!

Run MS' Fix-It and get the latest Windows Update version before updating.

Also here.
