I picked up an XFX 7970 for my system to replace an old 8800GT I was milking for way too long. I've got a 3570K and an Asrock z77 Extreme 4 running Windows 8 x64. I uninstalled the drivers for the Nvidia card popped in the 7970, installed the latest drivers from AMD and experienced the almost modern age of PC gaming. Boot the PC - no problem. Play games - no problem. Manually put the PC to sleep - no problem. Let the monitor go into power save and wham - black. It tries to come back to life many many times but I'm forced to power cycle the machine to get my desktop back. When I check the event log it's full of "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered." Any suggestions? Should I driver sweep the Nvidia drivers, go for the AMD beta drivers, reinstall the AMD drivers?

Do a clean install of the AMD driver.

Use Ccleaner registry section of the Ccleaner program to clean the driver entries out of the registry.

Here is how I would do it:

Turn off your anti-virus!

Uninstall the AMD Video driver and say no to the reboot.

Delete both the Nvidia and AMD folders, empty the recycle bin.

Install and run the registry section of Ccleaner. Tell it to clean all and save the registry when it prompts you...just to make sure...I have never had to use it...but

Reboot the pc and say no to the both popups.

Turn off your anti-virus!

Install the latest AMD driver, I used the BETA driver ( 13.8 ) and it is working flawlessly on my system.

Reboot and your system should work just fine.

I have used the above process and have had no problems with drivers.

Let us know if this did the trick :D

Apparently the Radeon HD7970 has an issue with coming up properly once it detects the monitor going to sleep. This fix has come up quite a bit: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1671423

I guess the only other option you have is to power down the monitor instead of letting it go to sleep.

Thanks Nasty. Your recommendation did the trick. I'm guessing the issue is with the latest driver and AMD's zerocore power feature. The Beta driver works great.
