This used to be a problem for me, and has recently started up again. I usually put my computer to sleep at night, and increasingly when I go to wake it up it turns out the computer is completely shut down. Restarting it will bring up the screen saying that Windows was shut down improperly and if I want to run windows normally, or in safe mode, etc.

I know that info from the memory dump file might be useful in diagnosing this, but I'm not sure how to access it or what part might be helpful. I'm running Windows 7 64bit.

Some people will claim Windows has always had a problem with sleeping. But I never had a problem it so... we can go three ways about this.
  • It is Windows having a problem with sleeping, and you can stop using it.
  • It's a problem with memory, which would require a replacement.
  • The power supply is going out, which would require a replacement.

Not really, because the last two are hardware problems and I only figured out the memory thing by some fluke because it kept passing memtest.

Ok, so now it's been crashing in a fairly predictable way, and more often.

When it wakes up from sleep, the monitors turn on, but they are both black, except for my mouse pointer, which can move around. So it seems that Windows is loading. However, nothing is active, there is nothing to click on and Ctrl+Alt+Del does not bring anything up. Windows hangs like this until I reboot. Any suggestions?

Anything useful in the event logs, in particular the System and Application ones? If you can upload them here it would be helpful as well.

I've also not had any problems with sleep.

I just set up Windows to record memory dump (if that's what your referring to). So next time it happens I'll post the info.

I also just updated my system BIOS, so perhaps that will help as well. We'll see. Thanks in the meantime.

For your crashes: Event Viewer

FascistNation : great thanks for the info. So far I've had no issue since the BIOS flash, but that's just one day of normal usage. So far, it's going to sleep and waking up as expected.
