I'm in the process of building a Windows 2008 R2 Standard server at home for personal use / working on business projects.

Anyway, I need to get Anti-Virus for this server, and was considering Norton EndPoint protection (I use the Security Suite which is free from Comcast on all of my PCs pretty much so I figure I'd just stay with a Symantec/Norton product, but don't have to).

My question is this: with EndPoint you purchase licenses per "end point" device. So, if I just wanted protection for the server only, would that be considered "!" end point (because the price was only $30 per license). Or is there a different version/price for a server, and end points are considered client PCs?

I was also considering ESET's solution, which you can get in a 5-pack (which I really don't need a 5 pack--just AV for the server). The server will be behind my router's firewall, so I don't know that i really need a full security suite, though.

Has anyone dealt with EndPoint and how does pricing for just the server go?

I refuse to pay for anti-virus products. I have been using Microsoft's Security Essentials and the win7 firewall along with the free version of Malwarebytes for years and they work just fine.

Normally I would use MSE except for I need something that runs on Wimdows Server OSes and I don't think MSE is compatible. I don't mind paying for security suite on a server because the work that's being done on it outweight the cost for a security solution.

I'll have to do that. Last I tried about 2 years ago it wouldn't install. Maybe MS has made changes. Any potential problems I should be concerned with? It's a base Win 2008 R2 standard install with SQL server 2008.

You're going to be running SQL on the server? Is it going to be a Domain Controller, too?
Do you envision it serving up lots of data on a regular basis? Real time anti-virus will impact access times If it's behind a hardware firewall (probably is) and it has a software firewall (it does) and the other PCs on the network have good anti-virus I wouldn't run real time protection on it. Keep Malwarebytes handy for on-demand scanning when/if necessary and call it a day.
