Please see my youtube videos to see what i am experiencing:

currently I have Vista64 on the laptop but was told that possibly installing Win7 might fix the problem but not too sure. If anyone has an idea of what may be the problem or have a solution it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

First off, you'd best get anything of value copied off of the laptop, pronto.

Few questions/comments:
  • Is there anytime when you can see the boot up screens? If you hit delete during startup, can you see the BIOS?
  • I saw nVidia 8400, is that right? If so, have you updated the drivers? If not, download the latest version, do a custom install (select perform "clean install") and see what happens.
  • Last effort, go to device manager (right click Computer, select Properties and Device Manager should be on the left), find the video card in Display Adapters, right-click and select Uninstall; then reboot, the computer should identify the video card and install it automatically. It might help.

Unfortunately, with a laptop not only do you have the monitor and video card as possible culprits, but the hinge also plays a factor.

Hope this helps.

my first question is can you hook an external monitor to it and get a image. If you lay the screen down, most laptops will default to using the external display for the picture. The sound that came from your computer suggest that it doesn't know you monitor is attached until you close and reopen it.

If the external does work as it should (may need to be set up as default first.) Then I would check/replace the cable running from your video card to the monitor. Both problems you displayed point at it as being the culprit IMHO.

What happens if you start the laptop in Safe Mode and then restart it normally?

Also, that is a widescreen model - can you set it for the proper resolution? That might be something like 1280 x 800 (rather than 1024X768)

The only way to start it in safe mode is to hook up the external monitor since that's the only way to see any text properly. 1024x768 is the only res. that let's me see the tool bar, other resolutions are too big or display nothing but lines all throughout the screen. Also, I updated the driver and that seems to have made it worse, now I get nothing even after closing the lid and reopen in it.
