I having a problem installing win 2000 pro on my 2.5 laptop hdd connected by USB. I've tried everything. This hdd is for a pc tablet. If I go to boot xp on it, it will work. Every time I go to install windows 2000 on it the setup will say that the setup has determined that you computers hdd is new or has been erased or that your computer is running an os that is incompatible with windows 2000. I can continue by pressing c then press f8 to agree then there is no hdd to select from. Only shows my media card reader drives. Only have this issue with win 2000. Any ideas???

You can't install Windows into an external HDD, if that's what you're trying to do.

I don't need a USB boot device. I need an os on this 2.5 hdd connect via USB to my desktop pc. Ubuntu is the only thing to work so far. Xp will install but crash when it tries to load. Windows 2000 setup won't even see the hdd but even win 98 will. The bios even sees it as an hdd. This hdd is for my pc tablet that can't boot from a USB or and external disk drive.

Debian works flawlessly externally, but you want 2000 huh? Okay, easy enough...just launch the W2K setup with the following command: winnt32.exe /syspart

This will cause the installer to place all of the installation on the second hard drive in a system. The drive must have a primary partition and be formatted for Setup to place the files.

So... what are you trying to do and why does it have to be Windows 2000?

It's a hard drive for a fujitsu c-500. An old pc tablet that won't boot from a USB or CDROM. So I had to pull it out and put it in my desktop pc via USB. So it was to be win2k because of the specs if the tablet. Just having trouble getting windows 2000 install to see there's a hdd. I thought I wouldn't be this complicated. Been trying for almost 12 hours. No joke. No luck.

Are there any devices this device can boot from?

My initial thought is just do a diskless install.

You'll probably want to make the disk bootable by installing DOS (i.e. format c: /s) to start things out.

Loading win 2000 on one computer then trying to boot in a tablet probably won't boot because it is totally different hardware to begin with. Did you hit F6 when trying to load win 2000 to add sata drivers via a floppy disk? (Assuming you are trying to load win2000 on a sata hard drive.) If you don't, you will never boot at all. It may not even find the hard drive.

Nasty

Then I'd say you're disk might be pooched...

or you need to start loading a config.sys with things like himem.

It's a pirated copy of win 2000 disk. Works fantastic tho. I also Tried a legit copy and same issue. The comptuer was on xp when trying to run it. I'm thinking of trying to just clone the hdd to another hdd. And yes the settings will be differnt when put in the tablet. Ask fujitsu to correct the bios so I can boot the tablet from cd and USB :)
