Hi All

I got suspicious that my automatic update wasn't working on one of my machines (my home computer). So I let it sit for a few weeks without going to MS (this was both intensional and due to lazyness and I have been busy).

So today I visit and see there are 2 updates I need. So I guess its not working. I visit MS all the time, but the automatic updates are nice for when I get busy or lazy. Anyone have any ideas?

XP Pro - SP1
Zone Alarm runs on this machine as well
Also have typical Spybot stuff and AV.
Services should be OK - I think I only disabled messanger on this machine. I should check.

Thanx

Manta just got his avatar ready - hopeses he getses invitation :)

Any other users on that machine? I have seen where the updates are downloaded and ask to be installed but "someone" turns it down.

No, but thats a good thought - I wonder if it won't work if I am not logged on as admin.

Thanx

Thats probably it, admin accounts only can update as far as I know.

Yes - thats how I have it set up. Thats why I started to wonder when no updates were being ready for install.

I think its the Admin account issue - I will look at that.

If you have installed your windows (XP especially) using blacklisted serial number, you definitely will not be able to update it. Make sure you are using a non-blacklisted serial number for your system.

I had similar problems with Automatic updates on my Win2K machine. Turns out I had to futz with registry entries to get it back working.

Hi Manta. This is my first post so learning curve at work. I had to look for how to do a basic reply.

I use Windows Automatic Update. I have noticed it will only do Critical updates automatically. It is not unusual for me to visit every week or two and find Windows Updates or Driver Updates. You didn't mention if the updates you found were general Windows Updates, Driver Updates or Critical Updates (which should have been done automatically.

Also, within windows updates you can set your preferences at the update site. This will eliminate updates such as language updates in routine Windows Updates from constantly showing up.

Though this post may be useless, it is infact my very first post. Now where the hell is the send button? Ah yes, Submit, here goes....

It should not be on the blacklist - its (the number) newer than the list and its legit.

I might check anyway.

Welcome to the forum :)

Yeah - I am only interested in critical updates, so it should work. Other updates you must visit MS for I realize.

I haven't checked out the preferences think - I might do that.

Thanx

"Disabled AutoUpdates in Control Panel.

Made sure to stop the AU service.

Then, got rid of extra registry entries in the AutoUpdates:

Kept AUOptions (set to 3)
Changed AUState (from 7 to 2)
Kept ODFFile Url.
Deleted anything else

Then, went into Control Panel and set AutoUpdates to Automatically Download and then notifiy me.

So far it connected yesterday after the fix and once today. I have ZA set to notify me when svchost wants to connect. Each time it did, the Windows_Update.log file was updated at that time, so it's working.

Thanks Logik!
