Desktop pc: AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz, 40 mb Maxtor HD 7500 RPM, 512 mb RAM, Windows XP Pro. OS
Cannot get the network connection wizard from the Windows Installation CD. After clicking on the item nothing happens for long time and never. Can not get Hardware add Wizard thru Control Panel. Get a wrong message that the the Hardware Wizard can not start because windows is running in a ‘safe mode’ [which is not true]. Strange ! And then it says something about Windows Installer. Not being installed !
Have a cable modem w/ a router. My laptop works ok w/ wireless card, so also another Desktop pc which has a wireless Ethernet card.
This desktop in problem is directly connected to the Cable modem thru Siemens Wireless router on the ‘LAN’ port by an appropriate RJ cable connected to the back of pc at the Ethernet card location. And was working fine so far. And all of a sudden it is defunct. Do not remember adding any program recently. Only thing is that the cable was off for 2 days and the problem started.
The computer pings ok to the server w/ the ipconfig from the command prompt. It gives all the correct IP addresses of the server. Please help.

I'm not sure I understand your problem. Is WinXP not installing your network card?

Download the latest drivers from your manufacturer's website.

As to your problems with the add hardware wizard, have you done any "tweaks" (I use the term lightly) to your Windows install?

I think you have deeper issues then just getting the NIC to work.

Was this a clean install or an upgrade??

and did you at least install SP1??
