I accidentally deleted some files earlier in the week and was wondering what the safest way to recover them would be. I downloaded 2 recovery programs and have yet to try them out as I'm a little wary of the warning. Im on a laptop with only 1 HDD and no other removeable media and the warning says not to recover lost files to the same drive, but doesn't clearly state why. I would only be doing this once and have never done it before. Does anyone know what chance I have of recovering these files and whether or not this could permamently damage this HDD? I can't replace it so that wouldn't be too good.

Thanks.

it says not to recover the files to the same drive, because every time u add something to the hard drive, ur risking overwriting the bits of data that are left over from the files u deleted, if it's been a week, u may have already lost them. but go ahead and try anyways, it wont damage your HD.

Ah, it would be my luck. Im going to try but I dont think they are recoverable, the evaluation versions of the two programs I used arent allowing me to try anyway. I'll have to find another program to attempt it.

you might want to get a 2.5"-to-3.5" converter and stick the drive in a desktop and run it from there, because just using your PC could over-write your data.

Handy Recovery 1.0 from www.simtel.net or Handy Recovrey 2.0 from www.handyrecovery.com. 2.0 is trialware but it lets you recover 1 file a day for 30 days.

I had good luck with the handyrecovery 2.0 trial.

It only allows 1 file (of any size) a day, but that was all I needed, and practically every other trial program was limited to 64KB files...

I am trying to recover more than one file and with what Deject said in mind I am going to give Handy Recovery 1.0 a try. Thanks all.
